One Post Won’t Move Anyone: How Often People Need to See You
The old “rule of seven” says people must see your message seven times before they act. Today the number is higher — and what counts as a sighting is much wider than ads.
Marketing folklore has a tidy rule: someone has to see your message about seven times before they act. It’s a fine starting point. It’s also out of date. With so much competing for attention, people now need to run into a business many more times, in many more places, before they feel sure enough to choose it.
Why a single post was never going to work
Posting once about a service and waiting for results is like asking a stranger to trust you after one handshake. People rarely decide that way. They decide after seeing you again and again, in different places, saying consistent things.
What actually counts as a “touch”
It isn’t only paid ads. Every one of these adds to the same tally:
- A post that shows up in their feed
- A review they happen to read
- Your Google listing appearing in a search
- An email in their inbox
- A friend mentioning your name
That is why a business present in several places moves faster than one that posts constantly in just one.
Consistency beats intensity
None of this means flooding the same person with fifteen messages in a week. That earns annoyance, not trust. The goal is steady presence over time, across several touchpoints, so that when someone is ready to decide, they have already seen you enough to pick you without hesitation.
A quick exercise
Write down every place a potential customer could meet your business today: search, social media, email, reviews, referrals, your website. Mark the ones that are active and consistent. The gaps are where your next customers are slipping past.
